Wilderpark were slow out of their blocks against visiting St Lawrence but finally recorded a fine 5-1 victory.
Saints were faster to the ball during the opening quarter and never allowed the Park to settle in midfield. They passed the ball accurately out of defence and into midfield but during the final quarter their attacks invariably broken down.
Park gradually settled and a quick break down the right created an opening but the keeper deflected a low shot for a corner. At the other end Paul Burgess was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area and Jamie Herbert made no mistake from the spot striking the ball into the corner of the net.
Soon afterwards Leon Lloyd replaced Alex David down the left flank and almost immediately Lloyd was put through hitting a fine left shot beyond keeper Sam Cox. Then, following a corner on the right, a Saints defender was also adjudged to have handled the ball and Joe McLoughlin struck the ball into the net with his usual accuracy.
Wilderpark started brightly in the second half with Lloyd effective down the left and Mark Taylor on the other flank threatening with some pacey bursts. Andrew Streeter worked hard up front and the defence with both James Hagon and McLoughlin acting as a screen were rarely troubled.
Taylor increased the hosts lead and finally Streeter netted twice to put the Park 5-1 ahead. David replaced Taylor who was suffering from an injury and his pace unsettled the Saints defence. In fact although Saints ended the last quarter brightly nevertheless they were always under pressure at the back finding it difficult to stem the Park’s attacks.
Wilderpark Reserves journeyed to Tonbridge Farm to play Tonbridge Baptist Church and were soundly defeated 6-0. The Baptist Church were always a step ahead of their opponents and finally deserved their emphatic victory.
Quote of the week. After a degree of dissent following a decision by referee Richard Budgen in the second half of Park’s Premier Division match against St. Lawrence, Steve Burgess was heard to shout from the back, “Shut up you lot and get on with the game.”
This coming Saturday 8 November Wilderpark 1st team are without a fixture but the Reserves play Westerham Reserves at Raleys Field. Kick Off 2.00 pm.
